Long before your baby owns a toothbrush -- or even has teeth! -- you’ll be looking after their smile.
Did you know that it’s important to care for your baby’s teeth before they even erupt? Gently wipe their gums with a damp washcloth after feedings (whether they drink formula or breastmilk).
Once your child’s first tooth appears, brush it twice a day using a child-sized, soft-bristled toothbrush with a rounded head -- and a pea-sized drop of baby-safe toothpaste.
Or you can try a “parents’ toothbrush.” These brushes have the ultra-soft bristles and rounded rubber heads that you need for a child’s mouth, but also have a longer, ergonomic handle to make it easy for Mom or Dad to handle.
As your baby turns into an active, opinionated toddler, they’ll be a lot more curious about the brushing process. Make it fun for them by buying toothbrushes decorated with their favourite character -- like Elmo, Dora The Explorer, or Superman.
Make sure to replace it every three months, or when the bristles start to look bent and worn. Their toothbrush should also be replaced after your child recovers from a cold or the flu.
Using a proper kids’ toothbrush is important because they’re specifically designed for children at each stage of development -- everything from the size and shape of the handle, to the softness and placement of the bristles.
Your child’s mouth is growing and changing all of the time, so always check the packaging of their toothbrushes to make sure you’re using the right one.
